Whimsical Christmas Patterns

I have found two perfect projects for this Christmas. Both are applique patterns in which you can make the entire quilt, or break them down into smaller projects. Stockings, mini-quilts, smaller wall hangings, potholders, place mats, you name it!

The first is called "Welcome to the North Pole" by Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins.
This quilt is adorable and features all the necessary elements for living at the 'Pole. There is a mitten shop, toy factory, elf bunkhouse, reindeer barn, Chinese food takeout joint, ice cream parlor and of course: the home of the jolliest couple on the block!
This pattern can end up being quite a detailed project depending on the amount of embellishing you plan to do. Sequins, metallic threads, ribbons, yarns and buttons beware!

I discovered this pattern when traveling to Utah in January. I fell in love so hard I paid RETAIL to buy it. (ouch!)

This pattern retails for $16.95, if you are interested in purchasing this pattern for the low Burgundy Buttons price of $12.95, email Leah@BurgundyButtons.com today.

The second must-have pattern for the season is called "A Critter Christmas" by Brandywine Design.
If you love the furry, fuzzy and cute this pattern is for you!

Little bears, penguins, ducks, bunnies, snowmen, kitties and a couple other critters I don't recognize are all bundled up and ready to share their holiday spirit.

This booklet retails for $20.00. If you are interested in purchasing this pattern for the low Burgundy Buttons price of 15.95, email Leah@BurgundyButtons.com today.

Whatever project you choose for holiday season, Burgundy Buttons has the perfect holiday fabric for you.

Queen of Unfinished Projects

I know that everyone THINKS they are the queen of unfinished projects, but SISTA, I hold the crown, the jewels, the fancy dress and the heart of the KING!

What am I working on?

Minnesota Hot Dish...
I used Louisa fabrics and some white background I had in my stash.
This one is pieced and ready to be quilted.

(this is usually when I lose interest!)

A Split Decision using Kashmir III and a Moda Cream that I buy by the bolts to have on hand at all times. It's the same cream that comes out with many collections but by a different name each time. I have about 10 blocks completed, not much of a start, but a start none-the-less. This pattern is amazing with only two fabrics and perfect for beginners.

A Daisy Chain using the Patisserie collection and the previously mentioned cream.

This is an easy pattern, it just gets monotonous. It's not like you can complete a block and see how amazing it's going to be. The assembled quilt is amazing, the individual blocks: not-so-much.
Because of this, I would never recommend this quilt pattern for a beginner.
Rather LARGE log cabin blocks using Hemming House Jelly Rolls.

I bought about eight Jelly Rolls so that I could pick and choose which strips I wanted to use. I will sell any unused Jelly Rolls in my store when I am done.
I have 10 or so blocks complete.

This was an unfinished table runner of my Mothers. I found it in her craft room when she passed away. It's pinned and ready to be quilted but I haven't been able to do it yet.
As if I didn't' have enough, I inherited quite a few unfinished project from her!
She was an amazing quilter, I wish I would have had the chance to learn more!

There are many, many more. I would say I have about 12-15 projects in the works. I will usually work on about 3 different ones during one sitting. I have trouble finishing anything. I always loose interest when it's time to quilt them- I hate actually quilting any project. Love to piece, hate to quilt. Am I the only one?

I think I am going to start sending off my projects to a long arm quilter. Any Takers?

I have decided:

To piece is human,
To finish is divine.

I wish I were divine!

Wild Thing

I have discovered the most amazingly simple pattern by Thimble Blossoms. Love it, love it, love it. While it called for charm packs, I used a Nest Layer Cake that had been sitting around waiting for that special project.

Here is a sampling of my blocks..

If you are interested in purchasing this pattern, please click this link: http://stores.burgundybuttons.com/-strse-460/Wild-Thing-Lap-Quilt/Detail.bok

If we are sold out, email me at Leah@BurgundyButtons.com, I will be happy to order it for you at the special BB price of only $6.50. It normally retails for $8.00!

Last night I also got a little bored with quilting and needed something I could finish fairly quickly, so I whipped up some quick curtains for my sewing room. I have been meaning to do this for awhile, but never seemed to get around to it. I used "At Water's Edge" fabric from Blackbird designs.

Of course, since I was on the Wild Thing kick, I had to make a Wild Thing block to see how it would look in the same fabric.

Wear Your Hobby on Your Wrist!

The Italian Charm Bracelet by Artist's Palette.
If you browse and slobber through the various Quilting magazines like I do, you may have spotted this dazzling little beauty in the Winter addition of “Quiltmaker’s; Favorites, Collector's Eddition”. It’s a must-have for you jewelry fans out there who prefer a little something special adorning your wrists.

The starter bracelet itself; which comes in either a matte or shiny finish, is simply composed of 15 silver charms measuring approximately 5 ½ inches. OK- that might be great for you tiny little folks, but we NORMAL sized people prefer something that won’t cut off the oxygen to our digits. Not to mention that we can’t quilt as well if our fingers fall off.

Oh, but what you can add….

The brilliant artists at Artists Palette have created little mini wonders in the form of quilt blocks to add to your newly acquired too-small bracelet. In my opinion, you need at least three to make your bracelet a comfortable fit. But that’s ok- I want them ALL. The quilt block charms bring back fond memories of some of our favorite blocks, like the Friendship Star, North Star, Log Cabin, Flying Geese, Starflower, Double Wedding Ring, and the Pineapple just to name a few.

I will be adding these fantastic starter bracelets and charms to my store very soon, so keep watch. I am eyeballing the mail box myself!

Introducing Twiggy

I have been waiting for this collection to arrive. It is not a pretentious collection, nothing fancy about it. But it is certainly not lacking in pizazz. It's the LACK of flash that makes this collection so appealing to me. It's just basic. Not too basic, it has just the right amount of intrigue without overwhelming the senses.

Moda even published the an adorable free web pattern using two Twiggy Layer Cakes and about 3 yards of coordinating fabric.

For the free web pattern, access: http://www.unitednotions.com/fp_twiggy.pdf

I sell the layer cakes in my shop as well as the Jelly Rolls and Fat Quarter Bundles. Visit my shop today by clicking here.

This is one of my favorite times of the year, Moda is shipping the most fabulous collections faster than I have time to oogle over them.

Check out these exciting new fabric lines:

Swanky

Chez Moi has gone uptown. A little more fashion and a bolder palette make this the most exciting group yet from the watercolor genius of Chez Moi. Swanky is chic and sophisticated with a flare for the dramatic. Bold design and sweet citrus colors are combined to create a plush collection of graphic prints that would suit even the savviest of connoisseurs.

Even the name inspires the need for fun, so typical of Sandy Gervais! This is not your “traditional” Patriotic fabric. I have been waiting for this collection for months!

Hello Betty

Do you enjoy retro fabrics? 30's fabrics? Does your mind long for a simpler time when families ate together and talked of school work and the goings on at the home and office rather than the latest photo on the cover of People? When Moms always wore a frilly aprons and the home always smelled of freshly baked pies? When the games we played included cards rather than combat? If that's you, then you will LOVE Hello Betty! Hello Betty was designed for Moda by Chloe's Closet.

Happy New Year!

It's that time of year, when we once again commit to extinguish bad habits and plunge into the new with a recharged sense of zest. We once again envision ourselves with tight tushies and toned abs, eating light, exercising daily, financially liberated and feeling fantastic.

And we once gain pledge to tackle that pile of fabric related projects that have claimed our sewing room, continually astounding us with the rate in which they seem to multiply. Will this be the year we complete them?

Once again!

What project do you have in the works?

My project is a particularly special one. As some of you know, my Mother died this past December. My mother was the most amazing quilter, I think she must have known every shortcut, every tidbit, every method, every guarded quilting secret there was. She had an amazing gift of putting colors together, ones I never would have been able to envision. She had owned a quilt shop for years where she was able to share her love and talent with others. After her death, one of the most heartbreaking, yet somehow comforting tasks I had to do was go through her "project shelves".

It's hard to describe how I felt as I pulled out, one by one, the giant Ziploc bags to see the project she planned to someday complete. Was it heartwrenched? Enlightened? It's hard to say, both. When it came to her project "packets", she gave new meaning to the term 'meticulous'. Each baggie had a pattern along with her planned fabric already cut to the correct yardage. To see the patterns that appealed to my mother, to see how she looked at a pattern and envisioned it in the specific colors, shades and prints that she selected. To see these things, it was like I was getting to know her better. It was almost like she was still there.

It was particularly difficult to come across the project entitled "Leah's Wedding Quilt". She had completed 35 blocks of the most beautiful neutral toned Log Cabin. It's what I had always wanted. No harsh colors, just creams and browns and all the comforting shades in between. And there they were, waiting to be lovingly assembled.

So my project? Finish my Mother's gift. And all of her projects for that matter. Suddenly hers have become more important than mine.
